Astronomy – Part 3

It is suggested by way of analogy that; our universe in its expansion can be compared to a balloon with beads on it. As the balloon blows up with more air, so the beads get further and further away from each other. This makes sense only because the beads are on the outer rim of the universe. But, we are not on the outer rim of the universe and neither does anyone know where the outer rim is.

Rather, if we were in the middle of the balloon, floating around, and the edge of the balloon was expanding, then it would make no difference in the distance of the beads within the balloon. Therefore, the expanding balloon must have some other dynamic that is causing the beads within the balloon to grow further, and further apart.

Now, for argument sake, if the first theory was correct then, even if the balloon expands, the beads in themselves would also expand relative to the expansion surface of the balloon. Take for instance a dot made by a marker on the balloon; when the outer surface of the balloon expands so does the dot expand relative to the surface area. If this is correct then maybe someone should measure the circumference of our earth and see if it has expanded and grown larger than it was, say, 100 years ago.

Astronomy – Part 2

The Heavens Declare

The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of his hands. Day after day they pour forth speech; night after night they reveal knowledge. They have no speech, they use no words; no sound is heard from them. Yet their voiceb goes out into all the earth, their words to the ends of the world. In the heavens God has pitched a tent for the sun. It is like a bridegroom coming out of his chamber, like a champion rejoicing to run his course. It rises at one end of the heavens and makes its circuit to the other; nothing is deprived of its warmth. (Psalm 19:1-6)

Astronomy is such a complex subject, and probably should be left to the astronomers and scientists with their immense capabilities of physics and mathematics. But, as for the everyday person like me, I take a look at the heavens – the stars and planets and galaxies – and am dumbfounded by the beauty and enormity of our universe. Just think about the photos the Hubble Space Telescope has sent back and once one has viewed those, one is left perplexed and speechless, making ineffable sounds of: aaah, ooooh, hmmmm, etcetera.

When one starts delving into Astronomy as a layman, the sense of inefficiency is overwhelming just by the mere fact that most of Astronomy is just too huge for the human brain to absorb – well at least my bit of gray matter and then my acetylcholine seems to stop functioning.

The more scientists try and figure out things, especially the age of our universe, the more confused and confusing propositions they make, even with very clever mathematical equations. The sad thing is that they will never be able to figure it out because they are finite and are not infinite – God.  Nevertheless, within their endeavors for solutions on our cosmos, surely scientists have got to realise that there has to be a creator behind it all. The sad thing though is that the solutions that many of the world-leading astronomers and scientist are looking for, and have actually come up with alot, leaves God right out of the equation; excuse the pun.

I love the Book of Job, chapter 38, the way God responds to Job, who is a living representation of man, his own wisdom, and his quest for knowledge and explanations.

JOB 38:1-41

The Lord Speaks

1Then the Lord spoke to Job out of the storm. He said: 2“Who is this that obscures my plans with words without knowledge? 3Brace yourself like a man; I will question you, and you shall answer me. 4“Where were you when I laid the earth’s foundation? Tell me, if you understand. 5Who marked off its dimensions? Surely you know! Who stretched a measuring line across it? 6On what were its footings set, or who laid its cornerstone— 7while the morning stars sang together and all the angelsa shouted for joy? 8“Who shut up the sea behind doors when it burst forth from the womb, 9when I made the clouds its garment and wrapped it in thick darkness, 10when I fixed limits for it and set its doors and bars in place, 11when I said, ‘This far you may come and no farther; here is where your proud waves halt’? 12“Have you ever given orders to the morning, or shown the dawn its place, 13that it might take the earth by the edges and shake the wicked out of it? 14The earth takes shape like clay under a seal; its features stand out like those of a garment. 15The wicked are denied their light, and their upraised arm is broken. 16“Have you journeyed to the springs of the sea or walked in the recesses of the deep? 17Have the gates of death been shown to you? Have you seen the gates of the deepest darkness? 18Have you comprehended the vast expanses of the earth? Tell me, if you know all this. 19“What is the way to the abode of light? And where does darkness reside? 20Can you take them to their places? Do you know the paths to their dwellings? 21Surely you know, for you were already born! You have lived so many years! 22“Have you entered the storehouses of the snow or seen the storehouses of the hail, 23which I reserve for times of trouble, for days of war and battle? 24What is the way to the place where the lightning is dispersed, or the place where the east winds are scattered over the earth? 25Who cuts a channel for the torrents of rain, and a path for the thunderstorm, 26to water a land where no one lives, an uninhabited desert, 27to satisfy a desolate wasteland and make it sprout with grass? 28Does the rain have a father? Who fathers the drops of dew? 29From whose womb comes the ice? Who gives birth to the frost from the heavens 30when the waters become hard as stone, when the surface of the deep is frozen? 31“Can you bind the chainsb of the Pleiades? Can you loosen Orion’s belt? 32Can you bring forth the constellations in their seasonsc or lead out the Beard with its cubs? 33Do you know the laws of the heavens? Can you set up God’se dominion over the earth? 34“Can you raise your voice to the clouds and cover yourself with a flood of water? 35Do you send the lightning bolts on their way? Do they report to you, ‘Here we are’? 36Who gives the ibis wisdomf or gives the rooster understanding?g 37Who has the wisdom to count the clouds? Who can tip over the water jars of the heavens 38when the dust becomes hard and the clods of earth stick together? 39“Do you hunt the prey for the lioness and satisfy the hunger of the lions 40when they crouch in their dens or lie in wait in a thicket? 41Who provides food for the raven when its young cry out to God and wander about for lack of food?

Scientist believe that; 95 percent of galaxies within the entire known universe is made up of Dark Matter, and they cannot explain how galaxies hold together let alone the universe itself. All the stuff that is visible to the human eye is made up of atoms and atoms hold the stuff we see together, but what they cannot understand is what holds the galaxies together because those things are invisible to the human eye. Even the technology they have at their disposal used to observe invisible things such as light that is beyond our humanly capable visible spectrum is not good enough to explain Dark Matter. When scientists first measured the motion of galaxies in the 1930’s and tried to weigh the matter these galaxies contained they were in for a big surprise; they found that there was not enough visible stuff in those groups to provide enough gravity to hold them together. These galaxies should in fact fly or break apart, but instead they do not and keep holding together. This effect and stuff the scientists have called: “Dark Matter”. They cannot observe it and neither can they really explain it. The best evidence that scientists can provide comes from measurements they call, “the cosmic microwave background” which they believe derived from the big bang – a very credible explanation by the way and worth researching. Nevertheless, there is an explanation for DARK MATTER, and it does not come from man but from God Himself and it is something that God alone knows and man will never be able to figure out.

The Supremacy of the Son of God

15The Son is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation. 16For in him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things have been created through him and for him. 17He is before all things, and in him all things hold together.

Just like Laminin – a protein that help keep our bodies holding together and not falling apart – so there is what I like to call a, “Cosmic Laminin” that prevents galaxies from falling apart. According to scientists, dark matter makes up 27 percent of our universe. The other of course is what they call dark energy (68 percent) and the balance of 5 percent is what is visible to us as humans. Between dark matter and dark energy, these two are responsible for the expansion and growth of our universe. Again, there is one fundamental ingredient that I believe they are missing, and that is that it is God who is in control and responsible for the expansion of the universe and how He does it, He alone knows. It is impossible and will always be impossible for man to comprehend things that are far beyond the physical.

Is it not amazing how dark matter kind of keeps galaxies together but the space in between the galaxies do not seem to contain any dark matter. If many galaxies are moving away from us at tremendous speeds, and this very fact implies that our universe is expanding, then what is causing it to expand? There cannot be any gravitational system because then the galaxies would remain in the same place.  Edwin Hubble discovered that galaxies are in fact moving away from us at tremendous speeds, and we are moving away from them (recession). As I said, dark matter seems to be the “Laminin” or “cosmic Laminin” that holds galaxies together, but what is in between the galaxies that does not allow them to together or keep them from receding or moving apart? This is still something that needs to be discovered!

I love what Andrew vanden Heuvel says about our universe – the origin and expansion thereof. The Big Bang theory (not the television show) …was actually an original Christian idea… It originated with a priest and mathematician by the name of George Lemaitre. But because we hear the word “big bang” it automatically gets connoted with evolutionist and atheists. I think that evolutionists and atheists hijacked this idea for their own schemes, but the point that Andrew makes is that; whether the universe is millions of years old or even six thousand years old, the one important thing that should matter is that there is a creator, who is the God of the Bible, and it is all about knowing Him. He is a God that has the infinite, omnipotent, and omniscient ability to create, and therefore He is a God worth knowing. Our earth is but an atomic speck in the universe, but the God who created the vastness of space and the universe want us to know him personally. Therefore, the heavens themselves – leave everything else out of the picture for the moment – declare the majesty and glory of this creator, God. The most astounding thing about all of this is that God is telling us a story in his expanding universe, but more astounding than this is that he has allowed scripture to be written so that he would not just be some vague or aloof (deterministic) God, but a very personal God who can be found if you seek him (Jeremiah 29:13; Deuteronomy 4:29)

Cabernet Sauvignon

Christian Leaders Ladysmith Logo

“Wow!” exclaimed Sarah as she sipped the Cabernet Sauvignon for the very first time. Swirling it around in her mouth, she could taste and smell a barrage of fragrances that permeated her taste buds. “It tastes like more… much, much more.” “I wonder where this comes from, and I’m not talking about the shop, just in case someone thinks I’m having a blonde moment”, she giggled.

“I’ll tell you”, said James, helping himself to a second glass, since the first glass did not even touch sides. “Being a viticulturist of sorts, I’ll be happy to bore you with some interesting details”, he said, with a please-let-me-tell-you expression on his face.

“Sure, tell me, this will be interesting”, Sarah responded, not because she really wanted to know, but was only passing common courtesy to James.

“Excellent”, continued James, overjoyed to unleash his academic knowledge to those who would lend him an ear. “It’s a relatively new wine. As a matter of fact, it was discovered by chance, or rather it was a chance crossing between Cabernet Franc and Sauvignon Blanc. It is said that ‘Sauvignon’ is derived from the French word ‘Sauvage’, meaning ‘wild’”.

“Shucks, it does have a bit of a wild taste does it not? And, after a few more glasses of this wild wine, I myself might turn into a wild thing”, Sarah said, batting her eyelids at James, her newlywed husband.

“I’m sure this doesn’t interest Timothy at all, because I’ve never seen him drink any alcohol”, James said while patting Timothy on his shoulder.

“I am not sure whether you are complementing me or patronizing me”, retorted Timothy, who was sipping on his cafe latte, not only because he enjoyed large amounts of it, but also because he was a teetotaller. “Actually, your information is interesting James, but may I also bore the two of you with some facts – interesting, or maybe not-so-interesting  – also regarding  wine; that is if the two of you want to hear?”

“Definitely; I did not know you were a connoisseur Timothy?” Sarah said as she equipped herself with a second helping of Cabernet Sauvignon, and also hoping that the big word she used would impress her hearers, especially James.

“A connoisseur…? No, not at all! But what I do know is that another mutant wine, just like this Cabernet Sauvignon you’re sipping away at, has hit the Christian world by storm and it is not being sipped on but rather been glugged away by the bottle full.”

“Is that so”, said James with itching ears and peaking interest. “If it’s a Christian wine, then it has to be a communion wine or something like that?”

“Yes, something of the sort” Timothy replied, “Because it has communities of Christians drinking from it. It’s not an actual wine that you drink from a bottle, but rather a ‘spiritual wine’ which is apparently given by God for His Church so that they can get hopelessly drunk in His love. I have seen it with my own eyes and I’ll tell you something; it’s a pathetic sight to behold. People, in their apparent drunken state, roll around with laughter, bark like dogs, slither around like snakes, roar like lions, break wind in the spirit – apparently this is a way of getting rid of Demons – and act like a bunch of morons; bringing shame on the rest of the Church. I have even heard from reliable sources; friends who have even witnessed first-hand, that some woman even go to church with no underwear on so that the pastor can ‘Touch them in the right place’ in order to deliver them from their Demons, hoping that these Demons will pass through their ‘Private areas’ and out of them. This wine, more than this Cabernet Sauvignon you are drinking, is so addictive that it has gripped many Churches with wholesale force.”

“Oh my word”, Sarah said with shock written all over her face. “I have always been told that ‘God’s House is a House of prayer and order’. Surely this cannot be happening.”

“Yes it is, and it is almost as old as the history of your Cabernet Sauvignon, or even as new, depending on how you look at it”, Timothy replied with distress in his tone . “My heart breaks for the church because it seems to have lost all of its faculties and is now whoring around in a brothel and even prostituting itself on the streets. It’s as if many churches have joined Aaron and the Israelites in their revelry and drunkenness, and are now worshipping a golden calf with this new wine.”

“In any event, I thought I would just tell the two of you, since you were speaking about new wine. The only thing is that; this new wine I am speaking of is deadly poison and no one seems to care. I suppose they can’t care as long as they are ‘Drunk in the Spirit’ and therefore all inhibitions and common sense is dulled, as if dulled senses is the new-in-thing and a new anthem: ‘Don’t be afraid to be confused… try to remain permanently confused’”.

“Oh well, here’s to Cabernet Sauvignon”, James said, raising his glass for a cheer, growing bored of the conversation. “Only kidding” he exclaimed, realising the stares of disgust he received from Sarah and Timothy.

“Well, whether you’re kidding or not, I cannot cheer to that. Will the two of you please excuse me? I’ve got a prison visitation to attend to.

“Oh! Who are you visiting?” said James feigning curiosity, and also trying to redeem himself from his earlier un-called for remark.

“I’m visiting a prisoner who, after he got hopelessly drunk, went wild, shot dead his wife and two children, and is now sitting on death-row waiting for execution. I have been given special permission for this visitation because prisoners on death-row are not allowed these types of visits and therefore I need to go. God Bless. Enjoy your Cabernet Sauvignon!”

Alcoholics Anonymous versus Sinners Synonymous

Christian Leaders Ladysmith LogoBill Wilson, known as  Bill W. and who Co-founded A.A, was a desperate alcoholic and learned that that alcoholism is an illness rather than a moral failure or failure of willpower. Apparently one of the steps toward the healing process is for the alcoholic to realise he/she is in deep trouble and needs to make that CONFESSION.

Well, in the same way, do sinners, like you and I, need to come to a place and realise that we are in deep trouble apart from the saving grace and regeneration of Jesus Christ.

The problem for most people is that they do not want to acknowledge that they are sinners and they measure their “GOODNESS” against their dilemma of sin and think that they are OK! Unlike an alcoholic, sin is not only a deadly sickness but also a moral failure.

Well, The Bible teaches that all have sinned and fall short of the standard of God (Rom 3:23) and that everyone is in need of salvation and regeneration. People need to realise that sin, just like an Alcoholic, is a desperate illness and that it is terminal.

But this is what Jesus has to say to the person who knows and confesses that he/she is in deep trouble because of sin; “WHEN JESUS HEARD THIS, HE TOLD THEM, ‘HEALTHY PEOPLE DON’T NEED A DOCTOR – SICK PEOPLE DO. I HAVE COME TO CALL NOT THOSE WHO THINK THEY ARE RIGHTEOUS, BUT THOSE WHO KNOW THEY ARE SINNERS’” (Mark 2:17).

Sinners Need a Doctor to heal them from their own iniquity. All they need is to confess that they do need help and come to the only One – Jesus – who truly is able to forgive, save and renew.
